Any trip to Northumberland must include a visit The Holy island of Lindisfarne, which is the foundation of England’s Christian heritage, standing on the rocky outcrop which forms the island is the striking 16th Century Lindisfane Castle.
Given it’s strategic position during the wars between England and Scotland Berwick was an important military town, originally soldiers were billeted in the town but due to the financial burden and complaints from the locals the barracks were built in 1717 and was the first purpose built infantry barracks in England.
This part of the beautiful Northumberland coast is dominated by Bamburgh Castle, built on a basalt crag, it is one of the most striking castles in England and is well worth a visit during your holiday.
