It’s better to check your finance options and set a budget before you fall in love with something that tempts you to overstretch.
Remember the X Factor
Remember to factor in any annual running costs in a holiday park: pitch fee; management fee; charges for utilities and insurance.
Have charges remained steady over recent years? Is there a cap on future rises? There’s no such thing as asking too many questions. Reputable operators have nothing to hide.

As well as variety in dimensions, there is a huge variety in terms of interior layouts and living space versus number of bedrooms. Take a look at a selection of static caravan homes and compare. Location (repeat twice)
Once you’ve done your research and got yourself a shortlist, try to visit each holiday location – even better have a stay. Once you’ve picked a favourite holiday park compare the different areas within it: Are you close to the amenities that you’ll use most? Do you prefer the quieter or the livelier area? Talk to the neighbours.
How far?
Before you let your heart set on a particular place think about how regularly you want to use it. If you want to getaway for quick weekend breaks how far is a reasonable distance to drive?
How long?
A static caravan holiday home purchase is not like a regular property purchase – some holiday parks have limits on the age of the caravan homes on their sites so check how many years you can keep it on site.
Remember why you’re buying a static caravan home
A caravan home is likely to depreciate over time, so think about how many years of use you want from it and don’t treat it as a long-term investment. Also, remember that it cannot be used as your main residence. Look at it as a reliable and fun holiday home where you can relax in a familiar and safe environment, the family running free with the wind in their hair.
It’s in the rulebook
Check the holiday park Terms and Conditions: Do you get discounted or free use of facilities? Do you get discounted or free entertainment passes? Can you sublet and, if so, will the holiday park help you to promote your caravan home? Are pets allowed in the holiday park and do they allow them on the nearby beach if that’s the nearest local attraction? Dog lovers might ensure they’ve ticked the first box, but it might be as well to tick both.
