Other Regions
The Regions for Holiday Parks
Cornwall
Cornwall was crowned ‘Best UK Holiday County’ in the British Travel Awards in 2010, and you can understand why. The beautiful towns and villages with their historic centres and picturesque harbours, which have often played a special part in many a movie and TV series, attracts all types of visitors.
Devon
Devon is one of the most popular destinations in England with award winning family attractions, historic sites and gardens and a wealth of outdoor attractions that don’t cost a penny. There’s something to explore from your holiday park all year round in this area; animal centres like Pennywell Farm, Paignton Zoo and the National Marine Aquarium are good for starters.
Essex
There’s one big reason that Essex is a popular holiday park destination - it has one of the longest coastlines in England, with a number of excellent blue flag beaches.Essex is a nice mixture of fun (Southend-on-Sea has the longest pleasure pier in the world) and a surprising cultural heritage (towns such as Maldon and nearby Mersea Island have been described as the ‘New Brittany’).
Suffolk
You can do the usual and load up the buckets and spades and head for the coast. Suffolk has some of the country’s best kept coastal secrets harbouring seaside towns like Aldeburgh and Southwold with great eating and shopping. Take a stroll along the Pier at Southwold or enjoy the established landmark on Felixstowe’s promenade, Manning’s Amusement Park, a traditional fun seaside attraction.
Norfolk
Norfolk is a great all-year-round destination. It boasts miles of unspoilt coastline and stunning wildlife in internationally renowned nature reserves. Norfolk has an incredible variety to offer with picturesque villages, historic market towns, an amazing heritage with stately homes and castles, and not forgetting the famous Broads, of course.
Lincolnshire and Humberside
Many of the holiday parks featured with BreakFree are situated near the beautiful coast. The Isle of Thanet encompasses the popular resorts of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate: 15 sandy beaches and bays with nine coveted Blue Flags and one Quality Coast Award. Kent’s southeast coast unfurls another ribbon of resorts.
Yorkshire
S Yorkshire is rich in history and its heritage is wonderfully preserved. The city of York was once the centre of a Danish kingdom and its Viking heritage is displayed magically in the Jorvik Viking Centre in the city. York’s magnificent Minster is a focal point for most visitors from which to explore the Roman remains of the city walls and the medieval buildings.
North East
There are so many castles in the region that you’re practically tripping over them. Discover the tranquillity of Lindisfarne, not the folk band, but the holy island seen as the cradle of English Christianity. Durham Castle and the neighbouring Cathedral are a combined World Heritage site, and the centrepiece of a wonderful city. Hadrian’s Wall is another World Heritage site, the most northerly reach of the Roman Empire and a potent symbol of its power.
North West
The Northwest is a stunning region taking in Cumbria’s world-famous Lake District, the Howgill Fells, the Forest of Bowland in Lancashire, and Cheshire’s stunning Peak District. These dramatic locations have a breathtaking variety of peaks, forests and lakes with walks and cycling galore.
Wales
Wales is filled with rich contrasts and boasts some of the UK’s most imposing and stunning landscapes, boasting three National Parks in Snowdonia, the Pembrokeshire Coast and the Brecon Beacons. Pedal power is a perfect way for families to discover the forests, hills and coastal paths of Wales, with 331 miles of traffic-free routes.
Somerset
The seaport of Bristol is a modern, cosmopolitan city with a rich and chequered history. Glastonbury Tor rises from the natural splendour of the Somerset Levels, steeped in the legends of King Arthur, The Knights of the Round Table and the Holy Grail. The ruins of Glastonbury Abbey lie at the foot of the Tor, reputedly the burial place of King Arthur and his Queen, Guinevere.
Dorset
The port of Lyme Regis, set on steep Georgian streets above Lyme Bay, was the setting for the novel and film, The French Lieutenant’s Woman. Lulworth Cove features the great natural stone arch of Durdle Door. To the south is Chesil Beach, its smooth pebbles polished by the action of waves, immortalised in Ian McEwan’s eponymous novel
Hampshire
Hampshire has a great mix, with the incredible seafaring and naval heritage of Southampton and Portsmouth, and swathes of unspoilt countryside, the New Forest being the pick of this. Designated a royal hunting domain by William the Conqueror in 1079, it remains a protected area and its famous ponies still roam free. Holidaymakers can also roam free on foot or on bikes.
Isle of Wight
The island draws visitors now just as it drew Queen Victoria to her home-from-home, Osborne House. The island is a fantastic family option with the seaside resorts of Ryde, Shanklin, Ventnor and Alum. Close to the magnificent chalk towers of The Needles, Alum Bay is famed for its layers of multi-coloured sand.
Sussex
In the county that hosted England’s most famous battle, history is always close at hand. Visit Battle Abbey and turn back the clock to 1066 for the Battle of Hastings experience. See the mosaics of Fishbourne Palace, a legacy of both the Romans and Normans, and a string of spectacular castles including Lewes, Hastings, Bodiam and Arundel, with its spooky Ghost Experience.
Kent
