This small seaside town has the unique selling point of being west-facing despite being on the east coast, and is one of the very best places to watch the sun set over the sea. Known as "Sunny Hunny" the town enjoy many hours of sunlight. With beaches, funfairs, beautiful striped cliffs and the opportunity to have an ice cream on the promenade, Hunstanton really is an ideal location for a family break.
The town’s main beach has consistently been awarded Blue Flag status for many years and represents the perfect place for safe family bathing. At the Old Hunstanton end you will find sprawling sand dunes, whilst at the other side of the town you will be greeted by golden sand. The beach is also very popular with windsurfing and watersports enthusiasts.
The most famous attractions in Hunstanton are the town’s stunning striped cliffs and its lighthouse. The cliffs mix red and white chalk with sandstone, providing a real treat to the eye. The historic lighthouse, meanwhile, was built in 1844 to replace the original 17th century structure. During the First World War it was a key monitoring station but is now used as a holiday home.
You can make a splash even in bad weather at the Oasis Sports and Leisure Centre located on the Central Promenade. Here you will find a leisure pool with an indoor adventure play area for the kids. Kids are also catered for at Captain Willie’s soft play activity centre.
You will also find plenty to do in the town centre. The High Street mixes shops designed for tourists with traditional high street names, whilst there are regular markets on Sundays where you can take your pick from a wide range of fresh fish.
For something a little different, you could go and watch the Hunstanton RNLI lifeboat station team practice their drills and maneuvers every Sunday morning at their depot in the old town.
Old Hunstanton is steeped in history. It was once a significant fishing village but is now best known for holiday cottages and arts and crafts shops. Whilst in the old town, you can visit the church of St. Mary the Virgin, where a flower festival is held each year.
