Whitstable blends its traditional fishing roots with a cosmopolitan community of artists, food producers, artisans and local traders, many working from the old fishermen's huts lining the seafront, where you can also walk along a pleasant, pebbly beach.
Head to Whitstable Harbour Village to discover local arts and crafts, seafood, speciality produce and delicious restaurants. The harbour is also home to a fleet of working fishing boats and a Thames Barge.
Whitstable Castle started life as Tankerton Towers in 1790s when it was home to the Pearson family, and then passed through many different hands until it came into the care of the Whitstable Castle Trust, a committed group of locals. The restored gardens are beautiful and well worth a visit.
