Despite the green-sounding nickname, Kent has more than it's fair share of sandy beaches, many with the prestigious blue flag award for quality. The Isle of Thanet includes the popular holiday resorts of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate, plus 15 sandy beaches and bays.
Allhallows holiday park
Allhallows holiday park near Rochester has direct access to a small pebbly beach, its own fishing lake and a nine-hole golf course. There's a wide choice of entertainment including sports coaching, horse riding and a heated indoor pool.
Kent's wonderful resorts include the Edwardian elegance of Folkestone and the market town of Hythe, where visitors can hop aboard a heritage railway that drops off at stations within walking distance of some lovely beaches.
Whitstable is a traditional fishing town that has attracted a cosmopolitan community of artists, food producers, artisans and local traders, many based in the fishermen's huts lining the seafront. There is a pleasant, pebbly beach and attractive harbour.
In Strood, Diggerland is a theme park dedicated to the giant yellow construction vehicle. There are indoor and outdoor play areas and rides, but the ultimate enjoyment, for adults only, puts visitors behind the controls of a JCB.
For history buffs, visit Canterbury for world-famous buildings including the magnificent cathedral. Rochester is an ancient city famous for its links to Charles Dickens, who lived in nearby Gad's Hill. If you know Dickens' books, you may be able to spot some of the real-life buildings that featured in his stories, including the Guildhall Museum, Restoration House, Six Poor Travellers House and Eastgate House and Gardens. There's a guided tour to lead you in the right direction.
